The Flex EMP Shield devices (AC Protection Module and DC Protection Module) are electromagnetic pulse, solar flare, and lightning protection systems designed to exceed the requirements of MIL-STD-188-125-1 for shunting over-voltage spikes. The AC and DC Flex EMP Shields protection devices protect the Inergy Flex Modular System from EMP events.

The Flex EMP Shields are 100% manufactured in the U.S.A. by EMP Shield, the universally recognized global leader in EMP protection technology. Inergy has partnered with EMP Shield to present the Flex EMP Shields, the only EMP protection devices designed for portable solar power stations (aka solar generators).

Built to exceed military standards (MIL-STD-188-125-1), EMP Shield pulls excess electricity from the electrical system in less than 500 trillionths of a second.

EMP Shield is designed to protect an entire system from Lightning, CME (coronal mass ejection, power surges, and an EMP (electromagnetic pulse). Proven and tested at Keystone Compliance, a federally approved Department of Defense (DOD) testing facility, the EMP Shield technology was struck with over 40 EMP strikes with no impact to the device.

MIL-STD-188-125-1 requires that the overvoltage spike from the E1 spike begin shunting 5,000 Amps within 20 nanoseconds. All EMP Shield models start shunting overvoltage in 500 trillionths of a second. EMP Shield is also designed to continue protecting through the expected durations of the E2 and E3 spikes produced by a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse.

EMP Shield has also been tested to all other military EMP Standards. EMP Shield devices are also UL 1449 compliant and have been tested at Intertek.

The EMP Shield can see and protect all the electronics and equipment connected to an electrical system.

This is accomplished by shunting (shorting) the overvoltage coming in from the grid or from solar panels attached to your portable power station.

Whether the electrons are collected within your electrical system or are attempting to come into your electrical system from an outside source, the EMP Shield will see the surge and protect your electrical system. Since the shunting is completed incredibly fast (500 trillionths of a second), the overvoltage is pulled away from your equipment before the voltage can rise high enough to damage it. EMP Shield calls this new technology SightSpeed™, and it ensures no heat is generated within the electrical system, protecting all electronics connected to the system.

A nuclear EMP is defined as having three distinct pulses of voltage/current. The E-1 pulse is caused by the gamma rays released during the nuclear reaction. The gamma rays interact with the electrons and the nucleus of the atoms that make up the atmosphere, and this interaction results in freeing electrons from their atoms. The free electrons ionize the atmosphere (ionization results in electron flow), which can be seen as the flow of electricity through anything that acts as an antenna. All of the wires that make up your solar generator and the PV array attached to it, not to mention our nations’ electrical grid, make an excellent antenna, which will produce an overvoltage condition throughout the affected area. In an optimally positioned nuclear detonation (approximately 300 miles high and over the center of the US), the entire nation will be affected by the E-1 pulse. The E-1 pulse starts at the time of the detonation of the weapon and continues until 1 microsecond after the detonation.

The E-2 pulse starts at 1 microsecond and continues until approximately 1 second after the detonation. The E-2 pulse is caused by the inelastic scattering (matter bouncing off other matter) of the matter from the nuclear weapon interacting with the matter that makes up the atmosphere, continuing the ionization of the atmosphere.

The E-3 pulse starts at approximately 1 second after the detonation and can continue for several minutes. The E-3 pulse is caused by the nuclear detonation distorting the earth’s geomagnetic structure, and then its reconfiguration. As the magnetic lines are pushed out of configuration and then come back into normal configuration, electricity is generated, and flows through the atmosphere until it contacts an antenna (wires).

The antenna that is most affected will be the nation’s power grid, but all arrays of wiring (even in your house or portable power station) will act as large or small antennas and will produce the flow of electricity and overvoltage conditions.

Yes. Specifically the Flex DC EMP Shield will protect solar power systems with maximum input voltages of 90V or lower. If you have questions about whether the Flex DC EMP Shield will protect your portable or permanent solar panel array, send us an email at support@inergysolar.com or give us a call at 877-891-2657.

No. The Flex AC EMP Shield installs simply by plugging it into one of the AC outputs on your power station.

The Flex DC installs simply between your solar panel array and the blue EC8 input on the Flex 1500 power station.

The Flex EMP Shield devices are each covered by EMP Shield’s industry-leading warranty for a full 10-year limited lifetime-of-the-product warranty with $50 lifetime replacement, and also backed by a $25,000 lightning and EMP protection insurance policy.

Inergy and EMP Shield offer a 14-day no-questions-asked return policy. After 14 days, there will be a $50 restocking fee. After 30 days there will be a $100 fee for returned items. This return policy applies only to the Flex EMP Shield devices.

No. The Flex EMP Shield was designed specifically for the Flex Modular System and EMP Shield warrants them for use only with the Flex Modular System. Generally, EMP Shield-branded devices are designed to protect the electrical systems to which they are connected that operate within a very specific voltage range. We feel lucky to have such a close relationship with the team at EMP Shield, and our companies just fit each other so well. Right now the Flex Modular System is the only solar powered battery or solar generator with complete EMP protection while in use or while in storage.

Unfortunately no, the Supercharger is designed specifically for the Flex modular platform and cannot be used with the Apex or Kodiak power stations.

The Flex Modular System is a portable system. Other chemistries like LFP or lead acid / AGM are much heavier, much larger, and in the case of LFP, more expensive. LFP does have its advantages, especially in permanent DIY installations or when being used to power RVs, but they are not ideal for portable solutions. Lithium NMC offers the highest power density and with the Flex Battery’s advanced safety features, is lighter and more compact than other battery chemistries without sacrificing safety.

No; you’ll have to purchase the Flex Battery-to-Ring Terminal Adapter Cable separately.

Short answer: Depending on how you build your Modular System, faster than any comparable system, ever.

The Flex Power Consoles’ on-board MPPT charge controller is rated for 14-90V of solar input, which gives you more options for solar panels in either parallel or series configurations. You will be able to charge one Flex Battery from 0 to 100% in about 3½ hours.

If you want to boost your solar charging ability beyond this, you can connect the Flex MPPT Supercharger, which includes two advanced maximum power point tracking (MPPT) charge controllers with up to 90V of solar charge input each, so it gives you more options and charges faster using solar panels—you can charge one Flex Battery from 0 to 100% in as little as 1 hour. You will love the freedom of capturing clean, unlimited power from the sun whenever you need it.

The Flex Modular Platform is designed to be completely plug and play. To connect the Flex MPPT Supercharger to the Flex 1500 or Flex DC Power Stations, simply add the Supercharger anywhere in your stack. The auto-lock system takes care of the rest. It takes only seconds to triple your system's solar charge rate.

For every Flex Battery you add to your system, you can also add another MPPT Supercharger to maintain a rapid charge time. If you added five Flex Batteries in pairs with five Flex MPPT Superchargers, your entire 6,414Wh system could still charge in only an hour and a half.

Before connecting six or more MPPT Superchargers, please consult with an Inergy Support Specialist at 877-891-2657.

Yes, you can use our EC8-to-MC4 adapter to do so. You can connect in either parallel or series (as long as you don’t exceed 90V max input).

No, but you can expand the battery capacity with the Flex Battery, almost infinitely.

No; the Flex Modular Power Platform only supports Flex Batteries due to the communication requirements resulting from interfacing with the Kodiak, Apex, and Flex Power Stations. No third-party batteries of any type will function with the system.

You can connect up to 96 Flex Batteries for up to 102 kiloWatt hours of storage capacity.

The system has a 1500-Watt continuous (3,000-Watt surge) pure sine wave inverter.

Yes! Our customers spoke and we listened. The Flex 1500 pure sine wave inverter is designed to output up to 80% of battery capacity at 1,500-Watt discharge under normal operating conditions before shutting down to protect the batteries and the inverter. As with any battery, drawing the maximum output continuously will affect the cycle life of your Flex Batteries, but the choice is yours.

Yes. The Flex Battery will nearly double your storage capacity with 1,069 Watt-hours of additional capacity. If you want, you could connect up to 96 Flex Batteries to one Kodiak or Apex for a ludicrous amount of battery capacity.

The Flex Battery is plug and play, requiring no manual Voltage balancing. It can detect the state of charge of your Kodiak, Apex or additional Flex Battery, and decide whether the partner battery is too low and needs to be charged. If the partner battery is too low, the Flex Battery will automatically charge it to a safe Voltage range, at which point it will automatically connect to the partner battery and work as one large battery bank.

This is worth mentioning once more. You can connect up to 96 Flex Batteries (approximately 102 kWh) to one Flex 1500 Power Station or Flex DC Power Station (or to an Apex or Kodiak) and enjoy the same plug-and-play functionality.

The Flex Battery will connect to the Apex or Kodiak with the Flex Battery-to-Ring Terminal Adapter Cable, which is sold separately.

No. The Flex Battery can detect the state of charge of your Kodiak, Apex or additional Flex Battery, and decide whether the partner battery is too low and needs to be charged. If the partner battery is too low, the Flex Battery will automatically charge it to a safe Voltage range, at which point it will automatically connect to the partner battery and work as one large battery bank.

Yes. All three work with the Flex platform.

Yes. The MPPT Supercharger can be added to Flex batteries to provide up to 90V of solar input and a maximum charge rate of 800W.

No, the Flex battery doesn’t include output ports.

Storing the system at half charge ensures the longest battery life. We also recommended checking the battery level every three months.

We listen to our customers. We have had numerous requests from our customers asking for an adapter to allow them to use their off-brand solar panels. We recommend Inergy solar panels as the safest and most efficient charging method because they use a 100-amp-rated EC8 connector system wired in parallel instead of 20-amp-rated MC4 connectors. But we understand that many of our customers have already invested in solar panels, and due to popular demand, we have decided to release an adapter to allow them to use their off-brand panels.

No, we designed the Apex to have a long service lifespan when primary energy sources are unavailable. We engineered it specifically for people who want a lightweight, compact, and mobile power system that can go anywhere they need it. The Apex sports a powerful 1,100 Watt hour lithium ion battery. However, in the User Manual it states “1,100 Watt hours, 550 Watts discharge continuous for 2 hours”. The next FAQ will address exactly what that means.

Lithium batteries, like EVERY kind of battery, are affected by how quickly they are both charged and discharged. The faster the battery is discharged, the less overall battery capacity you are able to access—and the fewer life cycles. Panasonic and Samsung, the world’s top two Lithium ion battery manufacturers, rate their batteries based on how quickly they are discharged. The faster you discharge them, they experience more voltage drop and loss of overall capacity.

Think of it like driving a car on the highway. Driving at 65 mph will give you much better gas mileage than driving at 90 mph. By driving slower, you’re able to go farther on one tank of gas, and your car won’t wear out as fast! And of course it’s the same with electric cars. Tesla, the leading electric car brand, warns drivers that engaging ludicrous mode will cause accelerated wear of the battery.

Many solar generator manufacturers simply state that under heavy use you may not get the full battery capacity. A 550 Watt discharge rate will allow you to more fully access the Apex’s 1,100 Watt hour capacity and will also help your battery last longer - up to 2,000 cycles. Remember - discharging your battery at the fastest possible rate is like driving your car at the fastest possible speed; it will wear out faster. The Apex battery can deliver up to 1,700 Watts of power at one time (AC: 1,500 Watts + DC: 200 Watts), but . . . by sticking to lower rates on a regular basis you can maximize battery capacity and enjoy a longer lifespan! That’s why we rated it that way!

Yes. The Apex inverter contains a lightweight, compact yet powerful 1,500 Watt inverter.  This inverter has a maximum 1,500 Watt output, and can surge much higher -- up to 3,000 Watts! This surge is for only a few fractions of a second when doing some very heavy lifting, like starting the compressor on a refrigerator.  When operating at the maximum output of 1,500 Watts, a lot of heat is generated by both the batteries and the inverter. The Apex inverter has a temperature switch that will turn it off after several minutes at maximum output to protect the battery from excess heat and to maximize life expectancy. After cooling for several minutes, the inverter can power back up and run for longer!  Overall, operating at the maximum on any product all the time will shorten its lifespan. We built many safeties into the Apex to give our customers a long lasting product that will serve their needs wherever they may be.

The Apex’s run time for heavy loads depends on several factors, including the state of charge of the battery, the temperatures of the battery and the surrounding environment, and whether the load is AC or DC.

For example, using a high demand power tool intermittently is much easier for the Apex than a continuous inductive load, such as a space heater or a heat gun.

If you really need to power a continuous inductive load for an extended amount of time, you should consider a gas generator or something specifically designed to meet your power needs.

We designed the Apex to be the lightest and most compact 1,100 Watt hour system the world has ever seen--not to be a permanent install solution.

If you need to expand your system, unlike any other portable solar generator, the Apex does give you the option of connecting an off-brand lead-acid or absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery.

Will it destroy your lead acid batteries? Absolutely not.

Will it reduce their cycle life? Yes, over time.

How quickly it reduces the cycle life depends on the battery you buy. Cycle life of lead acid or AGM batteries may be diminished over time due to several factors, such as usage, rating and quality.

We are releasing an external lithium ion battery so customers can expand capacity with a light weight, portable 2000 lifecycle battery just like the Apex.

No, Inergy is the only verified seller on Amazon. Also, If you make an Amazon purchase from a seller other than Inergy we can not honor the warranty.

EC8 connectors are compact, require no tools to disconnect, are rated to handle 6 times the current demanded by the maximum charge input and are simply the safest connector available. EC8 connectors are keyed to prevent misalignment and are engineered to reduce excess heat.

The EC8 connector is gold-plated brass. If you doubt the weather resistance of the EC8 connector, just look at your brass plumbing fixtures. On top of that, gold plating is used specifically to further enhance the connector’s resistance to corrosion.

If you need to permanently install your panels, we recommend purchasing UV-proof and waterproof connection covers readily available online or at your local hardware store.

No. The Apex and Kodiak system is designed to power individual appliances and devices rather than plugging into the home’s breaker panel directly. For instance, electric dryers, ovens, stoves, and water heaters all exceed the Apex's and Kodiak’s ability. However, gas ovens, stoves, dryers, and water heaters can be powered using the Apex or Kodiak – provided they have a standard 110 VAC wall plug.

If one panel in a portable, mobile solar panel array is shaded from the sun by even something as minor as a power line, it can take down that entire panel. If the solar panels are not wired in parallel, that one shaded panel can take down the whole array.

Having each panel peaked just right becomes critical. In a parallel wiring configuration, each panel contributes its best input to the overall system. In a series wiring, the worst performer acts like a governor on the other panels.

With a parallel wiring configuration, shading or a bad connection with one panel will not affect the rest of the panels. Your system will adapt better to changing light conditions and will, in turn, charge faster.

Small, permanent installs or mobile solar systems are often used in places where panels might get shaded from time to time.

Also, if you wire your panels in series, it is very easy to exceed the safety guidelines of the Apex and cause severe damage to your system, and it may even create a dangerous situation. Inergy solar panels feature intuitive EC8 keyed connectors that can be wired in only the correct way. They simply won’t go together the wrong way, so you can’t damage your panels or your system.
